How to choose your first travel destination
With so many wonderful places in the world, choosing where to go first can feel overwhelming. It might seem scary to pick that very first destination, but it doesn’t have to be. Many people want to travel but get stuck in the planning stage, unsure where to begin.
In this article, I’ll help you make that first decision feel a little easier.
1. Feel comfortable with your destination
You don’t feel stressed when you feel comfortable, right? So start by asking yourself: where would you feel most at ease?
A neighbouring country can be a great option – especially if you’d like to avoid flying on your first trip. And even if you fly, staying closer to home gives you more backup options. If your flight gets cancelled, travelling back by train, bus or ride share is much simpler.
Being in a familiar region also helps. Similar cultures, habits or languages make everything feel more intuitive – even small things like how people queue or order coffee.
But if a neighbouring country feels too familiar, that’s okay. A destination a little farther away, but still within the same continent, might give you more excitement while still feeling manageable – like my first trip to Italy.
The key is feeling comfortable, no matter the distance.
2. Find support abroad
Think for a moment – do you have a friend or relative living abroad who wouldn’t mind helping you a little?
Having someone nearby, even if only for support, can make a huge difference. They might not host you, but they could meet you at the airport, show you around or simply share tips.
It’s like having a quiet safety net. Just knowing there’s someone you can call if needed often gives exactly what you need on your first trip: backup, comfort and confidence to explore.

3. Start with organized trips
If you’re not ready to plan everything on your own but still want to travel – you absolutely can.
Today there are many options:
• all-inclusive holidays in Turkey, Egypt, Mexico, Thailand or the Dominican Republic
• package trips from a travel agency
• group trips, whether with friends or people you’ve never met before
All these options let you travel while someone else handles the details. And who knows – your next trip might be the one you plan yourself.
4. Choose destination by season
When choosing a destination, it’s important to think about when you want to travel – not only where.
Even if you have a dream destination, it may not be the best place to visit at every time of year. Once you decide to take a trip, choose your dates first, then look for a destination that fits that season.
For example:
• Scandinavian countries are best in summer – June, July, August
• Italy is beautiful all year, but cities like Rome are very hot in July
• July is a great month for beach trips
• Off-season travel brings lower prices and fewer crowds, but also shorter days or unpredictable weather
Take a moment to ask yourself: what kind of trip feels right for you right now? Choose something that fits this moment, not just a bucket-list dream. That’s more than enough for a great start.

Final thoughts
There’s no single perfect destination for your first trip – only the one that feels right for you.
Maybe it’s close to home, maybe it’s familiar, or maybe it’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to see. What matters most isn’t the distance or how impressive it looks on a map. It’s how it makes you feel: ready, curious and just brave enough to begin.
The rest, you’ll figure out as you go.
